Wix's built-in pop-ups vs an app

Every Wix site can show a pop-up without an app. Wix's own Popups, once called lightboxes, are built into the editor and flexible to design. Here's what they do well, where they stop, and when an app like Spin Wheel is worth adding.

Wix's built-in Popups are enough if…

  • You want an announcement, a newsletter box or a pop-up behind a button
  • You're happy designing it yourself in the editor
  • One pop-up that opens on its own per page is enough
  • You don't need it to open as visitors leave

Add a pop-up app like Spin Wheel if…

  • You want an offer as visitors are about to leave
  • You want a prize game, such as a spin wheel or scratch card
  • You want each prize tied to one of your store's coupons
  • You want a pop-up that shows on phones without extra setup

What Wix's Popups do well

A built-in Popup costs nothing extra and looks like the rest of your site, because you design it in the same editor. You can show it on chosen pages or the first page a visitor sees, add a delay, schedule it for a sale, or link it from any button or text1. In Wix Studio you get the same choices from different menus5. Wix's newer Harmony editor lets you set a delay of up to a minute9. For an announcement or a simple newsletter box, that's often all you need. Popup and lightbox name the same thing: Wix's developer docs say the editor and dashboard now say popup, while its code still says lightbox10.

Where they stop

  • No exit trigger. The Wix Editor has no setting to open a popup as a visitor leaves; Wix's help center lists it as a feature request2. A developer could add one with Velo code.
  • No once-per-visitor setting. Wix's help center points to Velo code for that3.
  • One automatic pop-up per page, and automatic pop-ups only show on the live site, not in preview1.
  • Hidden on phones by default. A desktop pop-up is hidden from your mobile site until you switch it on in the mobile editor4. That's the first thing to check when a Wix popup isn't showing on mobile.
  • No games. Wix lists gamified promos like spin to win as a feature request6.

A middle path: a Popup and an automation

If you want each new subscriber to get their own code without an app, Wix's automation builder can send a coupon by email after a trigger, including a unique single-use code each time8. Pair it with a subscribe form in a Popup7 and the code arrives in their inbox (our guide to first-order discounts on Wix sets up the automation click by click). What you don't get is a code revealed on screen, a game, or an exit-intent moment.

When an app is worth it

Any app adds a script to your pages, so add one only if you'll use what it brings. For a Wix store, those are usually the things Popups don't do out of the box: an offer as shoppers leave, a prize game that makes signing up fun, and a prize backed by a real store coupon. Spin Wheel does those, with every prize drawn on our servers from the odds you set. Our step-by-step guide to adding a pop-up to a Wix site walks through both routes, and if you're weighing wheel apps, see the spin wheel apps for Wix, compared.

Questions

Frequently asked

Are Wix lightboxes and Popups the same thing?

Yes. Wix's developer docs say the editor and dashboard now refer to a lightbox as a popup, and Wix's help pages use the new name while their web addresses still say lightbox.

Can a Wix popup open when a visitor is about to leave?

Not from the Wix Editor's own settings: Wix's help center lists an exit trigger as a feature request, so it would take custom Velo code. A pop-up app with exit intent, such as Spin Wheel, does it on desktop and phone without code.

Can I make a spin-to-win pop-up in Wix without an app?

Not with Wix's own tools. Wix's help center lists gamified promos such as spin to win as a feature request. You need an app from the Wix App Market or an embedded wheel widget. See three ways to add a spin wheel to Wix.

Can I use a Wix Popup and Spin Wheel together?

Yes. Use the Popup for an announcement and Spin Wheel for the prize game, and avoid showing both on the same page at the same moment.
